Life at UCB through the eyes of our student bloggers

Marketing at UCB

Marketing at UCB

Hello guys! Hope you are all well and feeling more fantastic than ever. This week has felt longer than ever and the amount of work I have to do is actually insane. But I can do this and so can you!

This week I thought I’d let you know more about being a marketing student at UCB and what I think of the field now as I have learnt about it for over two years.

The degree I chose to do was Marketing with Events Management. Essentially I applied because I thought I would be really into Events Management. Surprisingly enough, I enjoy the marketing part a lot more! This is why whenever someone asks me how to choose a degree, I always say choose something that involves two fields rather than one. Don’t get me wrong, I like Events Management but Marketing is what I feel close to – it is what I want to do for my career.

Some of you may be thinking what ‘marketing’ is all about so I’ve found a definition to explain it perfectly. “Marketing is the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.” – The official academic definition from CIM (The Chartered Institute of Marketing). This involves the brand, communication, printing, market research, psychology of consumer behaviour, promotion, design and so on. It is a very broad field as there are many different types of marketing, my favourites are advertising, digital marketing and social media marketing (my dream is to become a social media manager!), because they are the most relevant in today’s society.

The modules I’m studying/I’ve studied are:

  • People and Organisations
  • Marketing Principles
  • Business Economics
  • Promotional Communication Techniques
  • Consumer Behaviour
  • Events Industry in Context
  • Events Operations
  • Applied Marketing Research
  • Applied e-Business and e-Marketing
  • Communications and Psychology
  • Professional Creative Development
  • Research in Practice
  • Sales and Marketing Management
  • Advertising and Media Management
  • International Marketing
  • Leadership and Change Management
  • Digital and Social Media Marketing
  • Creative Media and Events

My favourites have been Promotional Communication Techniques, Applied e-Business and e-Marketing, Communications and Psychology and Professional Creative Development as they all involve some practical work rather than working on essays, reports and studying for time consuming exams.

For Promotional Communication Techniques we had to think of an event to plan in the National Sea Life Centre that would appeal to our target market. It involved creating a communication brief but the part we loved the most was creating the design elements – a poster and a leaflet. We worked in a group and this is the first time we had the chance to actually design something. We had SO much fun doing it and that’s when I realised I’m more into marketing than events.

Applied e-Business and e-Marketing let us make up a beauty company and create a website for it. We learned about everything you need to know about making your own website and it was so much fun designing every single little element of it as you could be as creative as you’d like!

Communications and Psychology let us work for an actual client – National Sperm Bank. Although at first we were completely lost as we had no idea what to do for our marketing campaign, we decided to make a video advertisement to be spread across YouTube and other social media. This ended up being the client’s favourite!

Professional Creative Development let us design once again! We had to design all social media elements as well as posters, T-shirts and key rings for the event that we organised ourselves! It was challenging but also one of the greatest modules.

I hope this gave you an insight of what it is like to study marketing at UCB. Stay positive!
