Sadly, summer is nearly up and September is about to begin. But don’t worry, it’s not all that bad, as you know what September brings… FRESHERS’ WEEK!
When I was starting at UCB this time last year, I was so excited for freshers’ week – mind you, I am just as excited now I’m a second year! It is a time where students can meet new people and get to know one another at a variety of different events. Freshers’ weeks at UCB are different to that of other universities as here you get 2 weeks filled with crazy days and nights out, from bar crawls, to quizzes, treasure hunts and even an indoor picnic.
For this week’s blog, I thought I would give you 6 tips on how to survive freshers’ week. And by this I mean how to have the best time EVER!
Tip 1 – Be open minded – University is full of people from all different countries and backgrounds. During freshers’ I strongly suggest you follow the classic saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.” You never know who you will meet at university, so talk to anyone and everyone. Who knows? One day they could become one of your closest friends.
Tip 2 – Take every opportunity – Making friends is something everybody wants to do at university. One way in which this can be achieved is to take every opportunity to socialise – which is exactly what I did. During my first two weeks, instead of shutting myself in my room, I went to the bullring almost every day with different people from my flat and my course.
Tip 3 – Do what you want to do – Although freshers’ week is a good way make new friends, you must also remember to do what you want to do. If you would rather stay and have a relaxed night in instead of going out, then you can! I know in my first year, going out every night was rather tiring, and I did stay in sometimes to catch up on sleep and get ready for the next day.
Tip 4 – Everyone is in the same boat – Before I started at UCB I heard this saying a lot and I never really believed it. However, after the first few days, I realised it was true. It turned out a lot of people were scared to leave home, many people were nervous, and like me, everyone was so excited to see what the year would bring.
Tip 5 – Be yourself – University is a chance to be the best you you can be. During your time at UCB don’t try and be something you are not. Instead, express who you are and find friends who accept you as you. By doing this not only will freshers’ be the best, your whole university experience will be.
Tip 6 – Have fun! – Make the most of these two weeks and make them ones to remember.
I hope you have found this helpful and are all looking forward to freshers’ week as much as I am! If you have any questions, feel free to comment. Any students joining UCB in September can also follow the Guild of Students pages on Facebook or Twitter to take a look at what’s in store for this year’s freshers.
See you on the dance floor!
