Can you believe it’s October and you’ve been at university for a whole month? Crazy, right?
For this week’s blog post I wanted to talk to you about feeling homesick. Now, I know what some of you are thinking, “but it’s only been a month,” or “how can you be homesick already?” – I’ve always told myself I’m being silly, too.
However, I am very much a family orientated person. We all get on well and like spending time with each other, and this can mean being away from my parents and sister can be difficult. Surprisingly, I have found this year harder in terms of feeling homesick than I did during my first year. Why? Well, I can think of a few possible reasons: for instance, I am now living in a house which comes with more responsibilities than I had living in halls. I am also more nervous about assignments and university work as it has stepped up from last year in terms of difficulty.
If, like me, you ever find yourself feeling like this there is always the option of a phone call home, skype or even facetime to stay in touch as often as you like. It’s always been comforting to know that someone is never too far away for a chat. I always find that good friends are also always there to help pick you up when you’re feeling down – whatever the reason might be. There are plenty of people at the university who can help too, whether it be your tutor or one of your lecturers.
What you should also bear in mind is that missing home is something everyone goes through at some point during their university experience. This is just something that comes with the amazing journey. I have done, learnt and seen so many things since starting university and I have loved every minute of it! Something I do like about being away from home is the excitement when I get to go back home and tell them about everything I’ve done.
So, if could give any advice to you about this topic it would be to not dwell too much on missing home but to look forward to when you will next see your family again. I mean, look how fast September went, I’m sure this month will go just as fast (as time does when you’re having fun!) It will soon be reading week before you know it! And if you do feel homesick, just remember, don’t make yourself feel like you’re being silly. It happens to everyone.
I hope you found this helpful. If you have any questions, please leave a comment.
