The other day I had a lesson on Writing Conclusions, and I found it so interesting and helpful that I thought it would be good to share it with you all.
Did you know that some teachers start reading from the conclusion and from there they start marking backwards? If you think about reading an article or book, you always know if it is relevant to your work by reading the introduction and conclusion, don’t you? Therefore, some teachers use the same technique to see how well you’ve managed to develop your writing.
Writing conclusions may be the most dragging part of the assignment as well as the trickiest. You may feel that you repeated yourself, or it repeats your introduction, or it’s too short, and it is not interesting. All these concerns can be solved now. I found it very useful, and I can’t wait to apply these hints on my assignments.
Always think that conclusions will push your grades up and that’s always a good thing. Here you have some things you can consider when writing conclusions:
1. Highlight key points throughout the assignment
This is carried out by adding a brief note on the side of the page to summarise each paragraph (if you are using Word, you can add a comment on every paragraph).
2. Concluding statements
This is giving your viewpoint of what you’ve written, always in the third person.
3. Recommendation for future practice
This can be given in your conclusion as you are showing the reader that you understand your research, and that you can refer to readings to suggest a recommendation for future practice.
You can also include a prediction. This allows the reader to understand that you are aware of some throwbacks and that you want to solve them.
You can then offer some solutions, which will cause the teacher to speculate. To do this, you need to ask yourself ‘what if?’ And ‘so what?’
Hints to support you when writing conclusions:
- In the UCB Portal, you will have access to the Library and e-Resource online, and if you click it, you will see your subject librarian and the link to their blog page. This resource is beneficial because you will find lots of relevant articles, journals, reports, etc. that your librarian will advise you to read.
- If you would like to have a good starting point to develop your knowledge browse, INFED is a perfect website to find relevant information. However, take into consideration that they are only to improve your understanding – you won’t be able to use it as it’s not academic writing.
- There are also a few more ways to start your research, such as using YouTube and Wikipedia.
This will help you out in understanding your topic and develop your knowledge on the topic. The more you read, the more knowledge you have, and this will be shown in your conclusion.
I hope you’ve found all this useful and will help in writing your conclusions. If you start writing a brief summary at the end of every paragraph as you write, this will help a lot when you write your judgement as you will only need to add it into it. I understand that we as students tend to start our assignments very well, but when we get to our conclusion, we write a few lines to finish off and hand it in because we have other assignments to complete. If you write brief vital points throughout, it will reduce time.
