Unhappy morning guys…
Yesterday was Blue Monday – the most depressing day of the year.
The 3rd Monday of the year was calculated by a study to be the most depressing day of the year, due to the result of bad weather, debt and that warmth of Christmas wearing off.
This is a real thing, they even made a formula:
Who would argue with that?
Being aware of this is somewhat reassuring however, because this is around the time motivation leaves everybody.
Diets are forgotten, gyms get dusty and beers are welcomed back like old friends, but an awareness of how our environment affects moods can help us understand how our brains and mental health work.
With the stress of submission dates and exams growing on everyone’s minds, it is important to mix up your routine to keep your mind fresh.
Wrap up and find some nature, eat your lunch someplace new, find a cheap flight to somewhere sunny. The lack of sunlight in January is oppressive, it slows your body down and makes sleep harder, but variety keeps motivation high!
Spring will be here soon and before you know it, the new semester will pass quickly, so keeping yourself motivated is a must.
A short walk down the canal from both The Maltings and Cambrian Hall, one can find Edgbaston Reservoir, which was built in 1827 by Thomas Telford to keep the canals topped up with water. It is still being used for that purpose. Today it is a nature reserve and hosts birds, newts and bats.
The walking path is 2km and has some of the best scenery in Birmingham. For the truly adventurous, rowing and sailing are offered by clubs that dock on the lake.
Just because winter has come, doesn’t mean you can’t try new things.
Keep adventuring and good luck with exams!
