Hallelujah, hallelujah! The sun is here and not to jinx it but it looks like she’s sticking around for a while! So, let’s make the most of it and talk all things sun. It’s actually amazing how many benefits the sunshine can have on us, so let’s take a look shall we?
- Sunlight exposure is responsible for releasing serotonin from the brain. Serotonin has proved to boost your mood and aid feelings of calm and focus. Coming to the end of the academic year, I could definitely do with some calm and focus right about now, especially when submitting my dissertation!!
- In regards to the release of serotonin, this can also aid your mental health. A drop in serotonin levels can result in a dip in your mood too, so get your sun cream out and sit in the sunshine for a dose of mood-boosting effects.
- In the UK, we get most of our vitamin D from sunlight alone and this vitamin D is crucial in maintaining bone health and absorbing calcium through our diet. So short but daily boosts of sunlight will provide us with all the vitamin D our body needs to remain healthy.
- Now, if you thought things couldn’t get any better, it’s been proven that sunlight actually helps us sleep better! *A very long and confusing scientific explanation on this* also known as – it helps our bodies establish the difference between night and day and therefore sends a message to our brain that when it gets dark it’s time to sleep. After all, who doesn’t love sleep? (I know I do.)
All in all, sunlight is crucial to us humans when maintaining body health but also our mental health. So my advice is to get out there, whether that be meeting a friend for a walk in the park or sitting in the sunshine on your own for a bit of peace and quiet. Enjoy the lovely sunshine, while she’s here, but remember to stay hydrated and wear your suncream. Summer is coming!!
Here’s to more sunshine and good vibes!
See you all next week,
